Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (スーパーマリオ ヨッシーアイランドSūpā Mario: Yosshī Airando?, "Super Mario: Yoshi's Island"), commonly referred to as Yoshi's Island, is a platform video gamedeveloped and published byNintendo for the Super Famicom/SNES console. Despite its North American and European title, this game serves as a prequel to all other games within the established Mario Bros. timeline. While featuring Nintendo's trademark Mariocharacter, the game's graphics and gameplay differed from all previous Mario games in that players control various Yoshidinosaurs rather than Mario himself, who appears as a helpless infant.

Yoshi's Island was released on August 5, 1995 in Japan, October 4, 1995 in North America and October 6, 1995 in Europe. A port was made for the Game Boy Advance as Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi Island + Mario Brothers (スーパーマリオアドバンス3 ヨッシーアイランド+マリオブラザーズ Sūpā Mario Adobansu Surī: Yosshī Airando Purasu Mario Burazāzu?) in Japan and asYoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 in other countries. However the Game Boy Advance version was made available free for download to those who had purchased a Nintendo 3DS system before August 2011. A sequel for the Nintendo DS, Yoshi's Island DS, was released in 2006.

Yoshi's Island received positive reviews. The game sold about 4,000,000 copies after release.

During the Nintendo Direct on February 13, 2014, Nintendo announcedSuper Mario Advance 3: Yoshi’s Island would be among the first three Game Boy Advance games to be released on the Virtual Console for Wii U in the United States. However, it was later announced that it would be released on April 24, 2014 after Advance Wars was to become one of the first three games to be released on the service.

The Completionist Edit

Jirard reviewed the game for the fifty-third episode of The Completionist, as well as the first game in the Month of Sequels for 2013.

In the opening skit, Greg and Alex walk in on Jirard crying in his bed. Greg leaves because he doesn't care, while Alex tries to comfort him. Jirard explains that "everyone needs him," like Catherine. (Jirard's sadness over Catherine becomes a running gag throughout the episode.) Alex suggests that instead of making this the Month of Love like the previous year, he makes it the Month of Sequels.

Jirard compliments the change in graphic style compared to the other Mario games, changing up the gameplay and game feel. Even Greg finds the presentation and music charming. He's also hopeful that 100% completion will mean something in this game due to the mini-objectives in each level. Predictably, he is not a fan of Baby Mario's cry. Though he does love the boss fights and navigation. Aside from the bonus levels unlocked, Jirard is disappointed by the completion bonus, especially with how difficult completing it is.

Trivia Edit

  • The battery for Jirard's cartridge of the game died after he 100% completed it for the review.
