Resident Evil 5, known in Japan as Biohazard 5 (バイオハザード5), is an action-adventure third-person shooter video game developed and published by Capcom. The game, the seventh installment in the Resident Evil series, was released on March 5, 2009 in Japan and on March 13, 2009 in North America and Europe for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and September 2009 for Microsoft Windows.

Defend It![]

Resident Evil 5 was the 3rd game that Jirard Defended on Defend It! Jirard, the defendant, debated against Andrew Campbell, the Internet, to prove that Resident Evil 5 wasn't a bad game.

Internet's Argument[]

Exhibit A: Lackluster Atmosphere[]

  • The Internet berates the game's abandonment of horror atmosphere in favor of a daytime setting that detracts from Resident Evil's roots.

Exhibit B: Forced Co-Op Is Forced![]

  • The Internet is not pleased with the requirement to use Sheva throughout the story, even when playing the single-player mode. He thinks the game is meant to be with a friend, and that hurts it when playing alone.

Davis and Schroeder comment on the co-op, stating that it was much better integrated in RE4, and it didn't feel like they were being forced to play with a friend locally or online.

Exhibit C: No Progression For Gameplay[]

  • The Internet finds that the game plays exactly like Resident Evil 4, and doesn't improve on anything, ultimately making the gameplay feel dated in his eyes.

Jirard's Argument[]

Exhibit A: Existance of Replayability[]

  • Jirard finds that Resident Evil 5 has replayability in its addition of a mission mode, which allows players to make more easily play the missions they want upon completion. He finds this ultimately makes RE5 more accessible to newcomers of the series.

Exhibit B: Forced Co-Op Is Not Forced[]

  • Jirard refutes The Internet's point about co-op. He instead notes that the game is perfectly playable even on your own, despite being designed primarily with co-op in mind.

Davis comments on how game franchises should always strive to improve themselves. This leads to him talking about Resident Evil 6, which everyone gets incredibly nervous about.

Exhibit C: Resident Evil 5 Is Not RE:4[]

  • Jirard is sick of people comparing the to Resident Evil 4, and believes that Resident Evil 5 can stand in its own merits and gameplay.
