Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie is the title of four different video game adaptations of the film of the same namewhich were released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System,Sega Mega Drive/Genesis,Game Boy and Game Gear. While the games were ostensibly based on the film, they also featured characters and plot elements from the second season of the original TV series. Like the previous game versions of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, none of the four versions of the movie game were ports of each other.

The Completionist Edit

Jirard reviewed the SNES version of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie for the 152nd episode of The Completionist. He is joined by Steve Cardenas, who played the Red Ranger on the TV show and movie.

The episode starts with a parody of the opening sequence of the Power Rangers show.

Jirard and Steve find the lack of narrative baffling, especially since it’s a tie-in game to a movie. Ultimately, they find it’s more like a simulation than a video game version of the movie.

Jirard appreciates the characters faithful to the property, but is disappointed by how samey everyone is in their costumes. Steve also criticizes the backgrounds as basic and unlike the Power Rangers, despite being vibrant. Similarly, they love the music despite not reflecting the Power Rangers.

Steve praises the game’s use of having two different planes to move characters during gameplay. Otherwise, they find the game’s combat satisfying, especially the special moves. However, Jirard briefly expresses sadness that there’s no giant robot section.

Eventually, Jirard theorizes that the Power Rangers is part of a military conspiracy.

Overall, Jirard finds that the game is a basic beat ‘em up game, but has plenty to enjoy despite that.
