MediEvil is a Gothichorror-comedy action-adventure gamedeveloped by SCE Cambridge Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainmentfor the PlayStation. It was first released in Europe and North America on 1 October 1998 and in Japan on 17 June 1999. The game was later re-released on thePlayStation Network in 2007. The game was followed by a sequel, MediEvil 2, in 2000, and a PlayStation Portable remake in 2005 titled MediEvil: Resurrection. The game is set in the medieval Kingdom of Gallowmere and centres around the charlatan protagonist, Sir Daniel Fortesque, as he makes an attempt to stop antagonist Zarok's invasion of the kingdom whilst simultaneously redeeming himself.

Development began in 1995 at Millenium Interactive in Cambridgeunder the working title of "Dead Man Dan". The game's visuals are heavily influenced by Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. Originally conceived as an arcade-style shooter for platforms such as Windows and the Sega Saturn, Sony's purchase of SCE Cambridge Studio evolved the game into a PlayStation title. The game received mostly positive praise from critics upon release, with praise including its blend of Hallowe'en themed visuals but was criticized for its controls and cumbersome camera work.

The Completionist Edit

Jirard reviewed MediEvil for the 108th episode of The Completionist. It was done as a pseudo-Halloween episode, and because it is one of Jirard's fondest childhood gaming memories.

Jirard finds the cutscenes were impressive for their time, despite datedness. These days, Jirard finds the presentation is clunky and isn't easy on the eyes. The design also feels flawed to Jirard. He also finds the Halloween theme lacking later on. The camera also isn't very easy to control, leading to frustration in platforming. However, he compliments the music and writing.

Jirard finds the platforming flawed in MediEvil, and its difficulty feels artificial, due to coming from the damage the enemies deal. However, he still finds the game fun, praising the variety and weaponry.

Jirard finds the completion bonus, the good ending, to be easy to get. He also doesn't see the cheat codes as that necessary or fun.

Trivia Edit

  • The episode uses The Living Tombstone's "Spooky Scary Skeletons" remix.
