Resident Evil, originally released in Japan as Bio Hazard (バイオ ハザード Baio Hazādo), is a survival horror video game developed and released by Capcom originally for the Sony PlayStation in 1996. It was later ported for the Sega Saturn and Microsoft Windows platforms, and re-released for the Nintendo DS and onto the Sony PlayStation Network.

The first installment in the Resident Evil series introduces series mainstays Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine as members of an elite task force known as S.T.A.R.S. At the start of the game, players select one of the two as they investigate the disappearance of their fellow team members on the outskirts of Raccoon City, and become trapped in an old mansion infested with zombies. As players explore the mysterious mansion, they uncover clues and solve puzzles, battling the various monsters along the way. Depending on the player's actions, the game ends with different outcomes.

Resident Evil was very well received critically and commercially, and has been credited with starting the modern survival horror genre. Its success spawned a multitude of sequels and spin-offs, starting with 1998's Resident Evil 2. A remake of the first game, simply titled Resident Evil, was released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2002, featuring new graphics, voice acting and many gameplay changes; its direct prequel, Resident Evil Zero, was released that same year using the same game engine. The events of the game were also revisited in Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles.

The Completionist[]

Jirard reviewed the game for the thirty-fifth episode of The Completionist. In his review, he covers the GameCube remake of the game.

Jirard notes how the presentation of the original PlayStation version is lacking and has aged well, but that the GameCube remake is a huge improvement. He admits that the gameplay is a bit weird to get used to, especially compared to other action games of the PlayStation 1 era. However, he himself doesn't mind the limiting aspects of gameplay, as they add to the horror experience. The limited inventory space does irk him, though. Special praise is given to the puzzles and boss fights, which he finds fun and challenging.

Jirard also loves the extra modes and weapons unlocked by completing various aspects of the game.

At the end of the episode, Jirard announces the winner of 20,000 subscriber contest: The Pizza-pletionist. (Not JonTron)

New Game Plus[]

Jirard re-reviewed Resident Evil for the 99th episode of The Completionist: New Game Plus. This time, he plays the remaster of the game for PS4, played on PS5.

This time around, Jirard gives a lot of praise to the amount of extra modes, including True Survivor and Invisible Enemies. He also appreciates the amount of extra costumes in this version of the game, and isn't even bothered by the addition of trophies. He considers the game "his jam" to complete, feeling satisfied in continuing to get better, and being able to translate the skill he's honed from other Resident Evil titles to this one. This newfound appreciation for the game causes him to upgrade his score for the game to Complete It.
