Mega Man, Mega Man 2, & Mega Man 3 are 2D action platformers published and developed by Capcom for the NES. In each of them, the player takes on the role of Mega Man, a robot developed by Dr. Light for good. However, in each game, Mega Man must foil the plots of the evil Dr. Wily, who creates a new army of robot masters to take over the world in each installment.

The first game in the series included a bonus points system as well as six robot masters, as opposed to eight which would become the norm for the series in the second entry. The second entry included a password system, a difficulty setting, and extra platforming items upon beating certain robot masters. Mega Man 3 added the ability to slide, as well as Rush Coil, Mega Man's dog companion that can help overcome certain platforming challenges. New adaptors for Rush Coil may be found by beating certain robot masters. The third entry also introduced the character of Proto Man; Mega Man's brother; as well as the concept of a decoy antagonist who seems to be behind the actions of the game before Dr. Wily is revealed as the true culprit.

The Completionist[]

Jirard reviewed the first three games in the Mega Man franchise for the 115th episode of The Completionist. He also does it for the start of a new collection pack review series on the Mega Man Anniversary Collection for PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox. This series was started in anticipation of Mega Man's successor: Mighty No. 9.

Jirard praises the aesthetics of the game, and as pushing the boundaries of NES graphics. Greg praises the sound as timeless. Though Jirard brings some attention to minor visual glitches on the Xbox version that the PS2 and GameCube versions don't have. As for gameplay, Jirard praises the jumping and shooting mechanics as intuitive, needing no tutorial to learn how to play it. Having ammo for weapons makes things frustrating for Jirard, though. Exclusive to the Anniversary Collection, Jirard praises the use of shoulder buttons to switch between weapons, as well as the turbo button. The games as a whole are difficult for Jirard, but he claims they get a bit easier as they go along. In regards to difficulty, he criticizes the Yellow Devil from Mega Man 1, as well as the extra stages in Mega Man 3.

Trivia[]

  • Jirard states that he is playing the Xbox version of the Anniversary Collection.
  • The music used during the end of Completionist episodes is the Dr. Wily theme from Mega Man 2.
  • When discussing the gameplay, Jirard references Egoraptor's "Sequelitis" on Mega Man X.
  • A Glitches With Old Man Snitches bit is done for the Yellow Devil exploit, but is renamed "Exploits With Old Man Fexploits" for this episode.
