The Completionist[]

Jirard reviewed Captain Toad for the 113th episode of The Completionist. It was released the week after game's release in North America.

Though Jirard acknowledges that the game is similar to the Toad levels in Super Mario 3D World, Jirard is openminded about the game. He notes how with a full game, the levels feel more unique and fresh. He also gives kudos to the presentation, despite its similarities to 3D World. He praises the use of Captain Toad for the gameplay style offered. The power-ups also help add to the gameplay without making it tedious. The secondary tasks can be a bit tedious to him, but the collectable gems help add to the exploration of the game. He also appreciates the turnip cannon and mine cart sections, even if they aren't perfect. He brings attention to the fact that the game was meant to be amiibo compatible, but the functionality was not available at launch.

Jirard finds the various completion bonuses fulfilling to get, but notes the time challenges lacking a reward disappointed him. As a whole, he finds the game worth it due to its plethora of content and creativity.

Trivia[]

  • Greg makes various references to Indiana Jones throughout the review.
  • Jirard claims a save file for Super Mario 3D World is needed to unlock the Bonus World. That is incorrect. The Bonus World is unlocked upon beating World 3 regardless of if there is a 3D World save on the player's Wii U.
    • However, having a save file for 3D World does allow for the Bonus World to be unlocked a lot sooner.
