Castlevania, known in Japan as Akumajou Dracula (悪魔城ドラキュラAkumajō Dorakyura, officially translated Devil's Castle Dracula), is an action-platformer video game developed and published by Konami for the Family Computer Disk System video game console in Japan in September 1986. It was ported to cartridge format and released in North America for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in May 1987 followed by a European release in 1988.
The game takes place in the year 1691 where players control Simon Belmont who is tasked with defeating the vampireDracula. It was re-released for the Family Computer (FC) in cartridge format in 1993. It is the first game in Konami's Castlevania video game series; it was followed by two more NES games titled Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (released for the NES in 1988) andCastlevania III: Dracula's Curse (1989). A fourth game was released for the Super NES and titled Super Castlevania IV.
Castlevania is often considered to be one of the best games on the NES. It has received critical acclaim ever since its original release. It sold impressively and is considered an NES classic by PC World, whileNintendo Power and Game Informer ranked it in their best video games list (at 22 and 48 respectively). IGN ranked it 19 among their favourite NES games.

The Completionist[]
Jirard reviewed Castlevania for the seventy-sixth episode of The Completionist, as well as for the first episode of Collaboration Month 2013. He reviews the game with video game collector Pat The NES Punk, who initially thinks Jirard is just a random let's player when he comes over to his home. Because it's a Halloween themed game in the month of October, Jirard dresses up as a priest, and Pat dresses up as a Ghostbuster wearing a Jason Vorhees hockey mask.
Pat states that the NES' limitations compliment the game's design and make it more difficult. Greg gets overconfident believing his can beat the game's six levels, but gives up quickly.
The two compliment the game's horror atmosphere and variety in environments and level design. Jirard also praises the game's main theme. Pat praises the whip as one of his favorite weapons in video game history. But Jirard still has good things to say about the secondary items Simon Belmont can use. On top of this, the two compliment the choppy gameplay that makes the player feel vulnerable, as a horror game should.
